The 1000 series, 3000 series and 5000 series are the most common and widely used types of aluminum plates. They have significantly different properties due to the differences in their main alloying elements.
1. 1000 Series Aluminum Sheets (Pure Aluminum Sheets)
1) Composition and Properties
This series is made of industrial pure aluminum, with an aluminum content of at least 99.00%. It does not contain any deliberately added alloy elements, thus retaining the most essential properties of aluminum.
- Advantages: Its conductivity and heat conductivity are the best among all aluminum alloys, very close to pure aluminum. It has excellent corrosion resistance, and can form a dense Al₂O₃ protective film on the surface. It has excellent plasticity, making it highly suitable for further processing. It is soft in texture and has a shiny appearance.
- Disadvantages: The strength is the lowest, the hardness is not high, it is prone to deformation, and is not suitable for use as structural components.
2) Common grades
- 1060: Contains more than 99.6% aluminum, known as "mature aluminum", combining purity and processing performance.
- 1050: Contains more than 99.5% aluminum, with performance very similar to 1060.
- 1100: Contains more than 99.0% aluminum, with a small amount of impurities (such as copper), having slightly higher strength than 1050/1060, but slightly poorer corrosion resistance.
3) Typical application fields
- Conductive materials: Components such as transformer coils, capacitors, busbars, and cables that require excellent conductivity.
- Heat-conducting materials: Heat sinks, heat exchangers, cookware (such as the base material of non-stick pans), lamps, etc.
- Deep drawing products: Products with high plasticity, such as aluminum bottles, chemical storage tanks, utensils, signs, bottle caps.
- Decorative materials: Due to their high reflectivity, they are often used in reflective plates for lighting fixtures, interior decorative items, signboards, etc. Building: Suitable for use in building panels and rolling shutters with relatively low strength requirements.
1) Composition and Properties
The main alloying element of this series is manganese (Mn), with a content typically ranging from 1.0% to 1.5%.
- Advantages: The addition of manganese increases the strength by approximately 20% compared to the 1 series, while maintaining excellent corrosion resistance and good processing properties. It is a rust-proof aluminum sheet. The manganese element also raises the recrystallization temperature of the material, making its performance more stable at high temperatures.
- Disadvantages: Although the strength is higher than that of the 1 series, it is still not suitable for high-stress structural components.
2) Common Grades
- 3003: The most classic aluminum-manganese alloy. It is made by adding a small amount of manganese to 1100, and is the most widely used anti-rust aluminum sheet, with a good balance between strength and corrosion resistance.
- 3004/3005: These grades are based on 3003 and have an increased magnesium (Mg) content, resulting in higher strength. They are commonly used in situations requiring slightly higher standards, such as tank bodies.
3) Typical application fields
- Kitchenware and household appliances: Evaporators and condensers for refrigerators, air conditioners, and microwave ovens, as well as kitchenware exteriors.
- Can material: Beverage cans (cans), chemical product cans, tanker skins.
- Construction field: Roofs, ceilings, walls, blinds, awnings, garage doors, etc., due to their strong rust prevention ability and sprayability.
- Vehicle interiors: Interior panels of buses and trucks, container panels.
- Sheet metal processing: Various cases and exteriors that require good formability and corrosion resistance.
1) Composition and Properties
The main alloying element of this series is magnesium (Mg), with a content ranging from 3% to 5%.
- Advantages: High strength. The solid solution strengthening effect of magnesium is significant, and its strength can reach twice or even more than that of 1-series aluminum plates. Excellent corrosion resistance, especially in marine and chemical atmospheric environments. Excellent weldability, making it the preferred material for ships and marine engineering. Good processing performance remains.
- Disadvantages: Compared to 1-series and 3-series, its cost is higher. When the magnesium content is high (such as over 5%), attention should be paid to the tendency of stress corrosion cracking, but common grades such as 5052 and 5083 have well controlled this issue through heat treatment processes.
2) Common Grades
- 5052: Contains medium magnesium content, being the most commonly used grade among the 5 series. It achieves the best balance of strength, formability and corrosion resistance, and is hailed as the "elite anti-rust aluminum".
- 5083: High magnesium content, with higher strength, mainly used for welding structural components, and is the standard material for ships and offshore platforms.
- 5754: Similar to 5083, commonly used in transportation fields such as automotive manufacturing.
3) Typical application fields
- Maritime and shipping: Core application areas include ship plates, decks, cabin partitions, offshore platforms.
- Vehicle manufacturing: Car doors, floor plates, fuel tanks, tanker tanks, subway and high-speed rail car bodies.
- Pressure vessels: Chemical tanks, oil pipelines, liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage tanks.
- Military uses: Armor plates, tank tracks, military speedboats.
- High-end electronic products: Mobile phone body frames (requiring CNC processing), laptop computer shells. Building formwork: High strength, corrosion-resistant, easy to remove, and the number of times it can be reused is much higher than that of steel formwork.
